iPhone scam sweeps social media

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. That's the message from the National Trading Standards eCrime Team in the United Kingdom as a new a iPhone scam sweeps through social media sites.

A fake advert is currently appearing on sites such as Facebook and being sent to people's inboxes claiming they can purchase the recently-released iPhone 6S for £1 without a contract.

But according to the UK organisation, who investigate online scams, there are a large number of criminals flooding social media with what looks like a genuine opportunity to buy the latest Apple product on the cheap.

The scam asks for a small payment to be made that you might not notice leaving your bank account, in what is called a 'subscription trap”.

SunLive has been contacted by a number of people claiming they have been targets of the rip-off.

National Trading Standards eCrime Team national coordinator Mike Andrews says if you've already fallen for one of the scams, it might not be too late.

'Always be suspicious of any offer that looks extremely cheap, particularly if you see it on social media or in an advert online,” says Mike.

'And if you do get caught out by one of these offers, remember you have the right to cancel a continuous payment authority.

'You can do this by getting in touch with your bank or credit card company as soon as you can and asking them to cancel the payments immediately.

'Make sure you do it quickly, because you may not be able to recover payments made before you become aware of them.”
