Campervan fire claims life

UPDATE: 13.45 pm on Sunday

Police have released further information on the crash at Te Poi.

At about 1615 on 16th April there was a sole vehicle crash incident on SH24 Te Poi, near Matamata.

The mobile home-style van was involved in a fire that claimed the life of a female passenger.

Her details are yet to be released.

The male driver was flown to Waikato Hospital with serious burns to his body, and is currently in the hospital's intensive care unit.

Police will not be releasing any more information until the vehicle has been inspected by Serious Crash Unit and fire investigation personnel.

Helpers at the scene took the man to a nearby farmhouse, where he was submerged in a bath of cold water.

Earlier:

Police inspector Peter Raynes said it was a relatively minor crash. "Somehow the vehicle has caught fire as a result. One person was found deceased". The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was sent to nearby farm, and airlifted the man to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.

He died from his injuries in hospital.

Emergency services were continuing to investigate the incident, Inspector Raynes said.

NZTA confirms the incident has closed State Highway 24 between SH29 and Te Poi Road.

The road was closed for several hours, detours were via Te Poi Road To SH29.
