Check your route before travelling

Thames-Coromandel District Council is recommending that families check their travel routes before hitting the road these school holidays.

This friendly advice comes after roads across the district were affected by the severe weather which struck the Coromandel on Sunday afternoon and early Monday morning.

Following a major slip on Whangapoua Hill, between Coromandel and Te Rerenga on State Highway 25, the road is now open in both directions. Traffic control and speed restrictions are in place but council recommends taking extra care when travelling this route.

On the 309 Road, there is a drop-out which has been coned by contractors. The rest of the road is down to one lane in places, but it is open.

Kennedy Bay Road is also closed on the Coromandel side of the hill, and to get to Kennedy Bay a detour through Colville and Waikawau Bay is currently in place. Waikawau Beach Road is open, but is one way in places and caution will be required.

One lane of Colville Road is open in places due to slips and debris, and extra care is required when driving this route.

One lane of Port Charles Road in places is also open as far as Adlor Hill Road due to a large slip which is cutting off access to Sandy Bay and Stony Bay. The bridge at the Port Charles fire station is currently being repaired to allow heavy vehicles access, which will enable work to begin on the slip.

Finally, both The Tapu-Coroglen Road and the Port Jackson Road are open.
