Travellers looking to book last minute accommodation for New Year's Eve may be out of luck with traditional hot spots at full capacity, according to new data.

Latest figures from Bachcare, New Zealand's largest holiday home management firm, show that with less than a week before the start of 2022 there is 33 per cent less accommodation available than the same time last year.

Bachcare spokesperson Zaina Razzaq says a number of regions with close proximity to Auckland are already fully booked.

'Areas such as Coromandel South, Matakana, Waikato, Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty are now at full capacity.

'There are a very small number (less than 3%) of properties still open in the Far North, Waiheke Island Coromandel North, Hawke's Bay and Northland.

'While there are some holiday homes available to rent in these locations, we are advising those people looking for a longer stay to consider deferring their travel to later in the month, or travelling further south to centres like Nelson, Golden Bay, Canterbury and Mt Ruapehu.

Razzaq says Aucklanders have snapped up properties within a three-hour driving radius of Tamaki Makaurau.

'Accommodation availability for NYE is currently around six per cent, which is a third down on the same time last year.

'What is particularly noticeable this time round is that travellers are tending to book closer to home more than they usually do, so there are more properties available in areas like Fiordland, Marlborough, Nelson and Wairarapa this year compared to 2020.

'We are putting this down to a general reticence around travelling too far if they get sick or have to go into lockdown or potentially with the uncertainty, they just didn't have enough time to plan a getaway further away."

Razzaq says accommodation options open up after the first week of January.

The outlook in Raglan.
