Rotorua Lakes Council is urging residents to prepare for the incoming severe weather, after a red rain warning was issued earlier this afternoon for the Bay of Plenty.
Rotorua Mayor Tania Tapsell is also urging locals to be on high alert in case of potential flooding risks.
'As a precaution, it may be wise for those living in low-lying areas or near waterways to consider finding alternative accommodation tonight,” Mayor Tapsell says.
MetService is forecasting a further 100 to 150mm of rain between 3am tomorrow until 9pm (Wednesday 1 February). This could include peak rates of 15 to 25mm/h and could cause flooding. This is a similar amount of rainfall we had over the weekend.
'Because the ground is now totally saturated from the rainfall we've already had, more heavy rain increases the risk of flooding so we want to make sure people are vigilant and prepared to act if needed,” the Mayor says.
'If you are apprehensive and in need of advice, support or assistance, including accommodation, please call the council.
'We want to make sure everyone is as prepared as possible in the event of flooding so please take precautions and err on the side of caution.
'Our contractors and staff have been busy with the last of the clearing up from the weekend and we are prepared.
'Council staff are also on standby to activate emergency response systems if needed.”
Be prepared and take precautions:
