One Love organisers “disappointed” to cancel

Organisers of Tauranga's One Love festival are 'disappointed” after having to cancel the event due to impacts from severe weather.

The festival was expected to bring 20,000 people to Tauranga Domain over the weekend.

'We have safety first as a top priority, but it's still very disappointing,” says event promoter Glenn Meikle.

'We had to cancel last year too, so it's quite gut wrenching. One positive is local businesses still would have done really well. A lot of people still came to the city.”

People who are expecting their refunds should see them in about 30 days' time, according to Glenn.

'The artists are all like the attendees, really looking forward to the event and getting out there. So all round everyone was quite saddened about the weather.”

Glenn says concert goers were 'very understanding” about the cancellation, despite the last minute call.

'People really appreciate safety comes first. The grounds were not suitable when we were there and it was forecast to get a lot worse. We tried our best to hold the event and no one knew quite how bad the weather was going to get.”

One big takeaway from this years' cancellation is the idea of moving camping and glamping indoors at the concert's venue.

According to Glenn, the idea came about when they were considering the fact people would have to set up their tents on muddy grounds in the rain.

'We thought it was going to be far from ideal, so we pitched the idea to have indoor camping to the venue. After we organised safety precautions like fire exits, we were able to go ahead with it.”

The idea was hugely popular on Facebook, with photos of the indoor setup garnering over 6700 likes and 3000 comments.

Glen says organisers may use this as an option at future events.

'Well done, this is so considerate,” says one commenter.

Unfortunately, the event is the last of its kind for summer. Glenn says the team of organisers are focusing their energy towards the next year of events, which 'people will be really keen on seeing go ahead”.

If you thought you were or are doing the CBD a favour save your money! The amount of closed roads and loss of parking is not the recipe for good business and as you know it is hard enough downtown without these obstacles in the way. There is a lot more to the CBD than a few bars and restaurants who are the only real beneficiaries of an event such as yours. Do us all a favour in the CBD and line up the Bay Park Arena for the next One Love concert if you are up to running another one!
