Evacuations after landslide crashes near home

UPDATE 6.54pm: An officer at the Hahei fire station says no-one was injured and the building is not damaged but will have to be checked, RNZ reports.

Four people have been evacuated from a block of flats in Hahei on the Coromandel after large slip narrowly missed the building and took out the driveway and a car.

People living in two houses near the slip also decided to leave for the night.

EARLIER 6.43pm: People have been evacuated after a landslide crashed into a home in a coastal Coromandel Peninsula town.

Fire and Emergency we were alerted to the large slip in Hahei at 4.18pm on Monday – as Cyclone Gabrielle bore down on the area – and responded with three fire crews.

'From the information we can see, everyone is out of the house and a small number of people in the area are being evacuated,” a spokesperson says.

'That's as much detail as we can provide.”

Thames-Coromandel is currently under a local state of emergency due to the approaching cyclone.
