Moturiki, also known as Leisure Island, is now open after being closed due to Cyclone Gabrielle, says Tauranga City Council.

At this stage, Mauao remains closed. This includes the base track and tracks to the summit.

"We appreciate the community's patience as we work to clear slips and assess damage," says a council spokesperson.

"The maunga/mountain will reopen once it is safe to do so."

Signage and barriers are in place at all closure points and are there to ensure public safety, says council.
