A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Taupo was mostly recorded as 'light' by those who felt it.
Geonet reports the quake at 4.13pm was centred 15km south-west of Taupo on Sunday afternoon.
The quake was at a depth of 5km.
More than 1200 people experienced feeling the quake with over 600 recording it as 'light' shaking.
An 3.1M after-shock was recorded by Geonet in the same location at 5.13pm, again 15km south-west of Taupo at a depth of 5km. This was felt by less than 100 people.
"We expect after shocks in the coming days," says a Geonet spokesperson.

On Saturday a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands region northeast of New Zealand's North Island. According to GeoNet, the quake hit 925km northeast of Whangarei at depth of 214km at 7:41pm NZ time.
Over 500 people, mostly along northern east coast of NZ, reported feeling the quake, reporting it as 'light' or 'weak'.
