MetService has issued a Severe Weather Warning for southern and central New Zealand with heavy rain and strong winds expected.

A complex low pressure system is expected to approach New Zealand from the northwest later on Thursday, and then cross the country on Friday and early Saturday. This system is preceded by a strengthening and moist northerly flow, and is followed by unsettled west to northwest winds.

'It's all change for Thursday as the high pressure of the last few days is replaced by an active area of low pressure moving in from the Tasman Sea,” says a MetService spokesperson.

'Severe Weather Warnings have been issued for heavy rain and strong winds across many parts of the South Island for later on Thursday and into Friday.

'A Strong Wind Warning has also been issued for Wellington covering the early hours of Friday morning.”

MetService say the heaviest rain is forecast for the ranges of Westland where 275 to 325 mm of rain could be expected with thunderstorms possible.

Warnings and Watches are in place over southern and central parts of the country for Heavy Rain and Severe Gales. People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts, in case more Watches or Warnings are added.
