Investigations are underway into a large shed fire that sparked an emergency callout overnight.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was alerted to a large building fire on Turner Road in Whakamarama at 7.53pm.

'A shed was fully involved,” says northern fire communications shift manager Lauren Sika.

'There were also two or three vehicles and gas cylinders alight.”

Five fire appliances with some support vehicles attended the fire from Katikati, Omokoroa and Greerton stations.

The appliances were at the fire for about three hours.

A fire investigator is at the scene following up with the incident.

In another callout later on Sunday night, two fire appliances responded to a private fire alarm activation in a building on Maunganui Road at 9.11pm.

'They arrived to find a panel showing a sprinkler activated,” says Lauren.

'The fire was extinguished and the sprinkler deactivated.”

The appliances were at the scene for just over an hour.

Salvage is now being undertaken.
