MetService has issued a heavy rain watch for the Bay of Plenty east of Opotiki.
Heavy rain rain is easing over the North Island, with possible severe gales for the lower South Island.
"A low is moving eastwards across the central North Island this afternoon and evening, and heavy rain over the North Island is easing," says a MetService spokesperson.
"However, a Heavy Rain Watch is still in force for eastern Bay of Plenty.
"On Sunday, a cold front should move onto the South Island from the southwest, bringing westerly gales to the far south, and a Strong Wind Watch is in force for the far south of the South Island."
People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case any changes are made, or further areas are added.

Area: The ranges of Bay of Plenty east of Opotiki
Valid: 9 hours from 2:00pm Sat 22 Apr to 11:00pm Sat 22 Apr
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Thunderstorms possible. Rainfall amounts may reach warning criteria.
Strong Wind Watch
Area: Coastal Southland and Clutha, including Stewart Island
Valid: 11 hours from 12:00pm Sun 23 Apr to 11:00pm Sun 23 Apr
Forecast: Westerly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
