Good morning and welcome to Sunday. Ko te ra tenei i hanga e te Ariki. Ka koa tatou, ka koa hoki ki reira.

MetService is forecasting a partly cloudy day with the odd shower and light winds, then westerlies developing in the evening.

It's a one layer clothing day with an expected high of 22 degrees, and an overnight low of 14 degrees. High tide is at 9.27am and low tide is at 3.32pm. Sunset is at 5.39pm.

This day in history

On April 23, 1861, there was the first major gold rush in Otago. On this day in 1966 the first Maori queen was coronated. Princess Piki, the daughter of King Koroki, was selected as the sixth Maori monarch − and first Queen − during her father's tangi, in accordance with Kingitanga protocol. She assumed her mother's name, Te Atairangikaahu

And April 23 is the date celebrated as William Shakespeare's birthday in 1564. He also died on this date in 1616.

Shakespeare was fun.

Fortunately the rain held off and the performances in the amphitheatre were standing room only. The amazing swordfight staged between the Montagues and Capulets was gripping (and frightening at times...), there was a light-hearted atmosphere and many people came in costume. (Fantastic to see a mediaeval fishwife talking in character to King Henry V...:-)) Lots of photo opportunities, chances to talk to the participants (and some great questions regarding Shakespeare and the various vignettes performed.) This Festival was kind of a precursor for a bigger and better one next year. Admission to everything was free; and it was worth much more than that. The energy and effort on the part of so many volunteers, was amazing. Judging by the smiling faces and the unanimous positive feedback I saw and heard, I hope the production Company (CRAFT) get even more support next year.
