A large high is expected to slowly move eastwards onto the country over the next five days.
"Strong west to southwest winds over parts of the country should ease as the high moves on," says a MetService spokesperson.
There is low confidence that a wind warning will be needed for Stewart Island and the coastal areas of Southland, Clutha and Dunedin on Tuesday for west to southwest winds.
Early Tuesday there is also low confidence that southwest winds will need a warning for parts of coastal Hawke's Bay and Gisborne.
Later on Tuesday and during Wednesday there is low confidence of warning strength westerlies for the Tararua District and Central Hawke's Bay.
Large west to southwest swells are also possible in the early part of the week along exposed coastlines.
