A front is expected to move northwards across southern and central New Zealand later today and Wednesday morning, preceded by westerly gales in some places, says MetService.
Strong Wind Watches are in force for parts of the South Island. A Watch for northern Wairarapa and Central Hawke's Bay has now been upgraded to an Orange - Strong Winds - Warning.
People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts, in case further areas are added or upgraded.
Strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures. Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
A strong winds warning is in place for Wairarapa north of Masterton, including Tararua District, and Hawke's Bay south of Hastings. This warning is valid for 10 hours from 12am to 10am Wednesday April 26. Westerly gales are forecast to be severe in exposed places, with gusts reaching 120 km/h.
