Motorists travelling around the Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions are being warned to drive with care.

The regions have been pelted by continuous heavy rain which has caused potentially hazardous roading conditions.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency reports that State Highway 34 is closed in the Bay of Plenty.

"Due to a slip on State Highway 34, 1km north of Valley Rd, Kawerau, the road is closed in both directions.

"Follow directions of emergency services on site."

Meanwhile, SH2 through the Karangahake Gorge is down to one lane.

A large slip came down on the highway, blocking both lanes on Monday afternoon.

Waka Kotahi reports today that the road is reduced to one lane with stop/go management in place.

"Expect delays and pass the scene with care."
