Flooding on blind corner raising safety concerns

Residents of a road in Pyes Pa are concerned that a flood remaining on a blind corner from last week's deluge is a dangerous risk to motorists.

'Williams Road is not a priority road obviously,” says resident Jenny Smith. 'Or they would have fixed it.”

She says the flooding occurred on Tuesday afternoon during a deluge of rain that came across Tauranga.

'Western Bay of Plenty District Council put out a flooding sign and then nothing. They could have spent another half hour clearing the drain. This is a blind corner on Williams Road. It's really dangerous.

'It's too blocked for locals to fix. I think it's a disgrace considering how dangerous it is.”

She says a lot of cars have had to drive through or around it. Driving around means crossing over onto the oncoming traffic side of the road at the blind corner.

'It's quite deep on the other side. It would be up to your knees. A car coming each way is quite dangerous. And it's been there nearly a week.

'It flooded on Tuesday when we had that big deluge. It floods there all the time but usually isn't right across the road. But this time it's really bad, this time the drain has blocked.

'I've never complained before but it's really bad. There's a big pothole there too that was also reported to council months ago. Nothing has been done about that either; the pothole wasn't dangerous but this is.”

Western Bay of Plenty District Council says the wet weather last Tuesday "caused a number of issues on our roads".

"The team have been busy getting around the district to fix these as quickly as possible," says senior transportation engineer Calum McLean.

"We're aware of the flooding issue on Williams Road and have arranged for a contractor to unblock the culvert.

"Work will begin on Tuesday, May 16, and will coincide with other works to repair damage to the road pavement."

if this was a bus lane or cycle lane, it would have been fixed with a great deal of urgency!! Get it sorted WBoP Council/ NZTA before someone is killed.
