Today in New Zealand history

On this day in 1886 Mount Tarawera erupted. The eruption lasted six hours and caused massive destruction. It destroyed several villages, along with the famous silica hot springs known as the Pink and White Terraces. Approximately 120 people, nearly all Māori, died.

On this day in 1889, NZ's first kindergarten was established. The first New Zealand kindergarten to educate children, in Dunedin, was based on the ideas of the German educationalist Friedrich Froebel.

Artistic swimming is on show this morning from 10.30am - midday at Baywave with Tauranga Synchro, as they showcase their artistic swimming routines they've prepared for the upcoming North Islands artistic swimming championships. Spectators welcome – Baywave's spectator fee may apply.
