A power outage due to a lightning strike is affecting hundreds of properties in Paengaroa while one house has been struck by lightning.
PowerCo is reporting that 773 properties in Paengaroa are without power.
The power outage occurred at 1.12pm. The estimated restoration time is 5.15pm.
A house in Conway Road has been struck by lightning says a SunLive reader.
"There's a hole in the roof and water leaking into the bathroom. Neighbours are helping pull tarpaulins over it."
The lightning strike to the Conway Road house is reported to have occurred between 12pm and 12.30pm
"Jib has been torn off and the room has been charred. The wall in the bedroom has had a hole blown in it. It's exposed the whole roof. It was like a bomb had gone off in the house."
"There's been quite a big downpour in Maketu resulting in surface flooding," says a Western Bay of Plenty District Council spokesperson.
"Please try stay off the roads but if you're already driving - be extra extra extra careful."
Traffic management will be in place for some roads around Paengaroa and Maketu.
"We're also aware of a significant power outage in Paengaroa due to a lightning strike."
Council staff say if anyone is in any immediate danger, ring 111.
"Stay safe out there."
