Heavy rain ahead

A front is moving into the far north today bringing heavy rain, says WeatherWatch.

"Expect a northeasterly airflow for the rest of New Zealand."

A mix of sun and cloud, and a few showers is forecast for Bay Of Plenty through to Northland in the east. Bay of Plenty should be experiencing rain overnight with east to northeasterly winds strengthening.

"Rain for Northland becomes heavy late morning, rain spreads into Auckland later in the evening or overnight as a front moves in from the north."

Temperature highs for Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty are expected to be 14-17 degrees Celsius.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
A mix of sun and cloud, late evening or overnight showers for the Central Plateau spreading in from the northeast. Easterly winds.
Highs: 12 – 17

Eastern North Island
Rain for Gisborne pushes southwards during the morning into Hawkes Bay, easing to showers, showers may not reach Wairarapa till afternoon. Northeasterlies freshen.
Highs: 15 – 16

Wellington
A mix of sun and cloud, easterly winds.
Highs: 15 – 16

Marlborough & Nelson
Morning showers clear then sunny spells break through, light winds.
Highs: 14 – 16

Canterbury
Mist of fog possible morning and night, mainly inland. Sun and a touch of high cloud otherwise, in the evening cloud thickens up with drizzle moving into coastal areas. Northeasterly winds.
Highs: 7 – 14

West Coast
Morning cloud then mostly sunny with a touch of high cloud, light winds.
Highs: 13 – 17

Southland & Otago
Mist or fog morning and night, mostly sunny otherwise with a touch of high cloud, light winds. Coastal Otago is has morning cloud then sun with northeasterlies.
Highs: 7 – 13
