Wind and rain has been taking its toll in the Coromandel peninsula with two slips closing State Highway 25 on the Thames coast road on Saturday night and a widespread power outage on Sunday morning.
Powerco is reporting that 2598 Whangamata properties are without power.
The outage occurred at 8.14am and site restoration is estimated to be at 12.15pm. Another 148 Thames properites remain without power following an outage at 12.41am. Power is expected to be restored to these properties by 11am.
Coromandel's CFM is reporting that contractors are on site at slip areas on SH25 on the Thames coast road which is closed.
"NZTA has been in touch saying that contractors are now on site," says a Coromandel's CFM spokesperson.
"It was not possible to start work last night with potential for further movement in the slip area. They are very conscious of the impact this has with long detours and will keep us posted with updates when they hear from their roading teams."
The slip areas are between Waiomu and Ruamahanga and another south of Tapu.
"Heavy rain has been falling in the Thames area overnight with 38mm falling in and around Thames since midnight. This brings the 24 hour total to more than 100mm.
"Rain on the eastern areas of the Peninsula has eased but wind is much stronger today with gusts in Pauanui of 30kph and back on the western side,Te Mata recording 35kph."
There are no updates at this stage on how long the two slips will take to clear with locals describing them as very large.
Coromandel's CFM is reporting on Sunday morning that they understand that some cars have been stuck between slip areas overnight.
"Further south the Karangahake gorge is open but had slips yesterday that closed the gorge for a period of time. The road is now open but has reduced speed through the slip area. Rain has eased in this area."
The forecast is for rain to ease to occasional showers.
