Outdoor fun and sports under new dome

Playing sports outdoors is going to be a totally different – and dry – experience for Ōtūmoetai Primary School's 554 students next term.

A new 35m by 35m Covered Outdoor Learning Area has been built over the top of the school's turf courts. This will put a stop to students being drenched by rain and wind when engaging in outdoor activities.

Ōtūmoetai Primary school Principal Zara McIndoe says that in the past many of the school's sports and outdoor activities and events have been cancelled or postponed due to lack of a weather-proof venue.

'Our school hall is not a suitable size, shape or space for indoor sport,” says Zara.

'[And] Given the majority of our children are barefoot most of the year, the current surface is too hot in the summer terms, and is often too wet and slippery in the winter terms.”

Shade Systems is the primary contractor for the project, and it took four weeks to install the COLA.

Zara says the project has been in discussion and planning for several years, eventually costing the school $580,000. As such, she expresses her gratitude for receiving an $115,000 donation from TECT.

'We would not have been able to proceed with this project without the financial support of TECT, and we are truly grateful for their generous contribution towards this project. Thank you TECT.”

The grand opening of the COLA Canopy will take place during Term 3's first week, on Friday, July 21.

'Ngāi Tamarāwaho will be naming, opening and blessing the COLA. And TECT trustees Kate Barry-Piceno and Mark Arundel will be in attendance.”

Zara says the COLA will make a huge difference for Ōtūmoetai Primary school students.

'We will be making great use of this new multi-purpose, all-weather area.”
