Severe weather outlook for the week

The weekend is looking mostly fine in the Bay of Plenty.

Some showers are expected to creep in over the city tomorrow before making way to a fine weekend.

On Thursday, a low in the Tasman Sea approaches northern New Zealand directing a strengthening easterly flow across the North Island, says the MetService's latest weather outlook.

Meanwhile, an associated trough moves northwards across the South Island and onto central New Zealand, followed by a strong and cold south to southeast flow.

The low should then move away to the east on Friday, while a ridge of high pressure builds over the South Island.

"From Thursday to early Friday, there is moderate confidence of warning amounts of rain affecting Northland and Auckland including Great Barrier Island, while there is low confidence for the Coromandel Peninsula on Friday," says a spokesperson for the weather organisation.

"There is also low confidence of warning amounts of rain affecting southern Fiordland, Southland, Clutha, and Dunedin early Thursday.

"In addition, for the first half of Thursday, there is moderate confidence a snow warning will be issued for inland parts of Otago and Canterbury south of the Rangitata River above 400 metres.

"Finally, on Thursday and Friday, there is low confidence of severe gale south to southeast winds affecting western parts of the South Island, also coastal parts of Marlborough including the Sounds, Wellington, and upper parts of the North Island from Taranaki to Bay of Plenty northwards, as depicted on the chart.

"On Sunday, another trough and low may approach central and northern parts of the the country from the east, directing strong and moist easterlies over the area.

"There is some uncertainty as to the forecast position and intensity of these features at this stage, and some risk areas for heavy rain and severe gales may be added in the coming days."
