The Desert Road, also known as State Highway 1, is closed today.
Both police and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have issued alerts saying the road is closed due to weather conditions.
"State Highway 1 (Desert Road) is closed between Rangipo and Waiouru due to weather conditions," says a police spokesperson.
"Motorists are advised to plan accordingly and follow diversions."
Waka Kotahi says due to snow, SH1/Desert Rd is currently closed.
"People should detour via SH49, SH4, SH47, SH46 and back onto SH1. Reverse for SB. Please allow at least an extra 40 minutes for this detour. Our next update is expected by 9am."
