Active night for fire services

Western Bay of Plenty fire emergency services were kept busy overnight attending three fires and a heavy fog incident at Papamoa, Mount Maunganui and Aongatete. 

A report of thick smoke in the Aongatete area near Wrights Road around 8.50pm on Saturday resulted in two fire trucks from Katikati attending the scene. 

“We didn’t find anything,” says Fire Emergency NZ Northern Shift Manager Hayley Saunders. 

“We responded with two trucks from Katikati to reports of smoke in the area but no smoke or fire was found and it seemed to be fog.” 

Papamoa 

A bonfire close to sand dunes in Papamoa resulted in a call out of fire services around 10pm on Saturday. 

FENZ received a call at 9.56pm to a fire at Papamoa beach. 

“A fire truck from Mount Maunganui attended. We extinguished it with sand.” 

Mount Maunganui 

Three fire trucks attended the scene of a fire on Maunganui Road on Saturday night. The fire at 260 Maunganui Road was in the Ray White building on the corner of Nikau Crescent. 

“We arrived at a fire at Mount Maunganui at 10.35pm,” says Hayley. 

“There was a small fire in the building. We had three fire trucks in attendance.” 

Fire fighters from Tauranga, Greerton and Mount Maunganui attended the scene. 

“The fire was extinguished by 11.04pm.” 

Hayley says a fire investigator is going to the scene on Sunday. 

Car fire in Totara Street, Mount Maunganui 

The Mount Maunganui fire brigade attended the scene of a fire on Totara Street. 

“We sent one truck from Mount Maunganui to the scene of a fire underneath a car at Mount Maunganui,” says Hayley. 

“We arrived at 10.50pm and finished there at 10.58pm.”
