Higher levels of fire danger are being predicted for the Bay of Plenty this summer.
Fire and Emergency district manager Jeff Maunder says the danger level is expected to be high with the forecast showing higher temperatures, reduced rainfall and windier El Niño weather patterns for this summer.
“Fire and Emergency is prepared to respond to the higher levels of fire danger expected this summer.
“It is business as usual for the brigades – mostly volunteers - in this area who are experienced and skilled at fighting rural wildfires.”
According to Jeff, all brigades have the vehicles and equipment necessary and will be approaching vegetation fires as normal.
“Fire and Emergency New Zealand always maintains a 24/7 response capability for our communities.
“The people of the Bay of Plenty can be confident that Fire and Emergency crews will continue to respond to emergencies in their community.”
Jeff has the following advice for those living in rural and semi-rural areas.
-Keep grass short around the house and other structures.
-Move firewood and other flammable material away from the house and other structures.
-Keep gutters clear.
-Clear access ways and make sure rapid numbers or address points are visible for arriving crews.
-Have a plan of action if there is a fire.

Great you have the trucks and equipment Geoff but you need to open your eyes, YOU DON'T HAVE THE MAN POWER. I fully respect your job as a fireman but if you don't have enough firemen you can't send the trucks in an expected time. Mount Maunganui springs to mind especially with all the grass fires from trains last year. Not your fault but don't down play the reality.
