A fine, settled day is being forecast for the region today, but severe weather is expected to move down the country tomorrow.
A large, deep, complex low-pressure system moves slowly southeast towards northern New Zealand on Sunday, with an associated front moving onto Northland from Sunday night, says the latest forecast from the MetService.
This system will move slowly southeast onto the North Island on Monday, with heavy rain and easterly gales preceding the front. Large waves are also expected to affect the eastern coasts of the upper North Island.
Orange Warning remains at the Coromandel Peninsula due to heavy rain to strong wind gusts.
From 100 to 150 mm of rain are expected, with peak rates of 15 to 25 mm per hour from Monday morning with possible thunderstorms.
Wind gusts could affect trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures.
Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
