With the increase of temperatures during the spring as a prelude for the summer, a lot of mall bugs, insects and other pests start to appear around houses, playgrounds and places commonly visited by people to during the warm days.
Some of these insects may not be considered harmful, but others could be a nightmare and even dangerous for the right person.
When it is constantly warm all pests are breeding increasing in numbers and are more active, so most insect and spider pests require control, says pest control specialist Paul Corton.
“The most common pests to deal with during the summers in the BOP are flies, ants, wasps and fleas.”
According to Paul, New Zealand has no extremely dangerous pests, however, people are concerned with the whitetail spider and other biting pests such as sand-flies.
“Some filth pests such as flies and German cockroaches can cause health issues if left in large numbers.
Wasps can be very dangerous for some people who are allergic or just very painful for others who are stung. If you have a wasp/bee allergy do not tackle wasps yourself call a professional to do it safely.”
But where exactly do these pests live?
Pests that affect people such as insects, spiders, rats and mice are often living near people which is why they become a problem, says Paul.
“We provide them food, shelter and environments where they can thrive. From a commercial kitchen to someone’s home. Pests fill a wide variety of habitats.”
Besides protecting the skin against the effects of the sun, Paul recommends using repellent to ward off pests, especially on children.
“There are some good natural products available now. A portable insect light trap can be great while camping to keep the bugs away. Some tramping huts have rodent problems so keeping food put away is a good idea.”
Finally, to make the most of the holidays and have no problem with pests during the summer season at home or somewhere around, these are the recommendations from Resolvit owner and pest control specialist Paul Corton.
- Remove the things pests need and you with have fewer problems Water -shelter habitat.
- Keep the garden tidy, trim plants away from buildings.
- If doing DIY Don’t leave building debris piled up for too long, rats will make it their home
- Dispose of rubbish especially food waste properly.
- Be careful where pet food and water are left, pests will find this.
- Automatic feeders can call pets, removing uneaten pet food so pests are not attracted.
