Severe weather outlook for the rest of the week

Rain is predicted for tomorrow and the weekend.

Rain is being forecast to end the week.

The MetService is predicting occasional rain on Friday morning. The rain is expected to be more peristant in the afternoon.

In its latest severe weather outlook, the MetService says a low is expected to develop west of the North Island during Friday and deepen on Saturday.

The low should move over the North Island during Sunday, although the exact track is a little uncertain at this stage.

"There is low confidence that a heavy rainfall warning will be needed in Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, inland Waitomo, Bay of Plenty, Taumarunui and Taupo on Saturday and Sunday," says a spokesperson for the weather organisation.

"On Sunday, there is also low confidence that severe gale north to northeast winds will require a warning in Northland and Auckland.

"The low may become slow-moving north of Bay of Plenty or just east of the North Island on Monday.

"There is moderate confidence that heavy rain in Gisborne/Tairawhiti, Hawke's Bay, Taihape and Wairarapa will require a warning on Monday and Tuesday.

"Strong to gale south to southeast winds are likely about the centre of the country and there is low confidence that a wind warning will be needed in southern Taranaki, Wellington and the Marlborough Sounds on Monday and Tuesday.

"A high is expected to move onto the South Island on Sunday or Monday."
