Despite rain winning on the day, two teams have now emerged to play in the finals of the 2024 Versatile Tauranga Williams Cup at Easter.

The close of play called by the umpires, in the BOPCA Versatile Tauranga Williams Cup semi-finals on Saturday, March 23, brought a sense of anticlimax to proceedings.

Expectations were on high alert, with top qualifier Element IMF Cadets taking on Sandford Wall Lawyers Central Indians at the Fergusson Park, and Eves Realty Greerton hosting Bond & Co Mount Maunganui at Pemberton Park.

Play stuttered to life at the Fergusson Park and Pemberton Park before players were forced from the field by rain showers. The players sat around most of the afternoon, attempting to return to the field of play, before the umpires at both venues signaled that the encounters were abandoned.

The score cards showed that Cadets had lost the toss and had posted 43 runs for the loss of one wicket, when time was finally called on the match.

Bay of Plenty Cricket Williams Cup match conditions state, that in the advent of the semi-finals being unable to be completed, to the two top qualifiers will progress to the title decider.

This means, that Cadets will play Greerton on Easter Saturday, March 30 at the Bay Oval, to decide the 2024 Versatile Tauranga Williams Cup title.

A similarly disappointing end to the Williams Cup competition befell Generation Home Lake Taupō, after their plate semi-final match against Pāpāmoa was abandoned.

Pāpāmoa will now host Geyser at home at Alice Johnson Oval on Saturday, March 30.
