Two tournaments and great weather for Waihi Golf

A long weekend has been attracting a large number of visitors, and the sunny, calm days, together with a busy club schedule, means a very full course at Waihi Golf Club.

The Waihi Nine Hole Section held a very successful Open Tournament on Tuesday, April 23.

Playing in perfect weather conditions, along with the generosity of the tournament’s main sponsors, EVES Real Estate, made for a good day for not only the Waihi members, but also the 27 visitors attending from eight other clubs.

The competition was all on stableford, and run in three divisions.

The top scorer for the tournament was the Division 2 winner Sarah Bullen (Fairview) who scored a great 25 points.

The Div 1 results were first Helen Brady (19), with Louise Robb (Fairview), Heather Danby-Scott (Whangamata), and Lorraine Meyer next all with 18 points.

In Div 2, Sarah Bullen (25), then Jill Mason (20), with Anne-Louise Erceg (17).

In the Men’s Div 3, Vaughan Heath (Te Aroha) (23) was first, with Phil Davis (Te Aroha) (18) second, ahead of four others on 17 points.

MONDAY VETS:

A large field contested the second round of the nett medal competition in good conditions.

Kerry Lewis has put himself in a strong position for the men’s title by taking the day with a 65 nett.

Susan Mustard is doing the same for the ladies by having 69 nett to be second on the day. Norm Sanderson, Helen Baynes, and Jenny Tubman all had 70 nett, while Allen Smith and Mark Mora both ended with nett 72.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

A stableford haggle resulted in Vivienne Lilley, and Salley Grindlay both having 40 points, with Jacquie Bain and Jill Morrison next with 37.

Shelly Lithgow and Jan Robinson were next with 36 points.

Vivienne Lilley won the Hidden Hole with 8 points.

For the second week in a row, the “Dreamers Player of the Week” was won by Rosalind Giffney with a 72 nett this time.

THURSDAY GOLF:

The morning haggle was a Pete Rowe triumph with first place 40 points, plus he had two, and won the hidden hole! Second in the haggle was Ted Murray (36), then Ken Mustard, Jim Powell, and Andrew Keenan with 35.

In the Afternoon Haggle, David Campbell topped the field with 38 points, with Kelly Exelby and Charley Gurr next with 37. They were ahead of ten others on 36.

HUMES MONTHLY MEAT PACK TOURNAMENT:

This was held on Friday this month due to clash with Anzac Day.

The major winners of this for April were Ben Warne (Formosa) for the nett with 72, and Eddie Evans for the nett with a 68, while Tim Parish took out the best stableford with 38 points.

Other winners were in Div One, Gavin Tobin (Remuera), Brian Verryt, Chris Pilmer, and Mike Morrison all finished with 37 points, then with Daryll Denyer on 36.

n Div Two, Vince (leftie) Jones had 37, and Brian Roche 36. Then Wayne Green, Shane Mowatt (Matamata), Kaylene Croker, & Dylan West, all 35.

SATURDAY LADIES:

A small field contested this week’s haggle, with Bev Ireland coming first with a 70 nett. Kathy Ashton was next with 73, then Sharon Deacon on 74. Hidden Hole won by Kathy Ashton.

SATURDAY MEN:

The morning haggle resulted in the visitors showing the way, with Glenn Kirsten (Flexiclub) first with 38 points, with Martyn Steffert (Tieke) next with 37.

Daryll Denyer had 36, ahead of Allen Smith, Tom Wallace, Mark Mora, and Eddie Bruce all on 35. Terry Mischefski had the only 2.

In the Afternoon Haggle, Paul Weaver had the best round of the day with 40 points.

Next were Dave Morris and Mike Rose both on 37, with Brian Roche, Jonathan Clare and Logan Phillips all on 35.
