After 16 years at the helm, Richard Thurlow has decided the time is right to resign from his chief executive position at Waipuna Hospice.

Waipuna’s director of HR and Quality, Becky Gardiner will assume the role of Interim CEO.

Waipuna Hospice board chair Debbie Pattullo says under Richard's leadership, Waipuna Hospice tripled its number of volunteers and patients cared for, doubled its clinical staff, and secured triple the funding from DHB/Te Whatu Ora.

“Richard’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping Waipuna Hospice into the respected institution it is today,’ says Debbie.

“His dedication and passion have left an indelible mark on all of us, and we owe him a great deal of gratitude for this.”

Debbie says during Richard’s term, the Waipuna charity shops expanded from two to six locations, increasing gross income from $400k to $5m per annum.

“Over the past 16 years, I have been privileged to lead a fantastic organisation that provides palliative services to our community,” says Richard.

“It is humbling to be allowed into patients’ lives during such a personal time for them and their whanau. The journey with Waipuna Hospice has been wonderful, and it is incredible to see how much we have grown and developed.”

Richard thanks the board, staff, volunteers, healthcare partners, and “most importantly, our supporters”.

“Throughout the 16 years, Waipuna Hospice would not be where it is now without all of you.”

He says he will miss the role and wishes Waipuna the very best in the future.

“But it is time for me to put my focus on something that I hold dear – my family, and provide an opportunity for new leadership and innovative ideas to take Waipuna Hospice to the next level,” says Richard.

Waipuna Hospice is to be commended as a team effort from the top down. Richard, you will be sorely missed at the helm. We welcome Becky into the interim position. The work done for seriously-ill clients is amazing. The fund-raising by so many supporters and volunteers proves the spokes in the wheel philosophy works well.
So, Richard, know that you have done a superlative task of helming the ship of caring people who have been able to show compassionate care to all those who needed Waipuna Hospice assistance both in house and in the home.
Well done.
From a Waipuna Hospice Volunteer.
