New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) has awarded $20,000 to the Parksyde Activity Centre in Mangakakahi, Rotorua, to enhance social interaction and connection for local senior citizens.

“The Parksyde Activity Centre caters to the social, recreational, health and educational needs of seniors in the Rotorua area, promoting their mental and physical wellbeing," said Manager Robyn Skelton.

“Our opportunity for older people to volunteer helps keep our door fees low while allowing seniors to connect and use their skills.”

With no membership fees, Parksyde uniquely serves over 1000 seniors weekly through 44 diverse activities, including seated aerobics, line dancing and book clubs.

The NZCT funding will support daily operations and assist in developing a Community Services Hub, enhancing collaboration with local organisations such as Age Concern.

This initiative aims to better serve the increasing senior population in Rotorua, projected to rise significantly in the coming years.

Attendee Kitty Bennett shared, “Fun, laughter and making new friends were things I never expected when I started attending classes.”

Sheila Evans reflected, “I first came to Parksyde as a stranger and now come to meet friends who used to be strangers.”

“It’s important that everyone has opportunities to connect with our people in fun ways and senior citizens shouldn’t miss out," said NZCT general manager grants, marketing and communications Ben Hodges.

“We’re delighted the funds we raise through responsible gaming fundraising partnerships with Kasper’s Sports Bar, Mo’s Bar, and the West End Tavern make such a positive contribution to the community.”
