Scheduled visitor safety works are temporarily closing the Windows Walk in Karangahake Gorge, but the door remains open for other stunning heritage experiences.
The Windows Walk will be closed to all visitors for safety purposes from November 18 to 29 while work occurs.
Department of Conservation Tauranga operations manager Kristine Theiss said these works will enrich the visitor experience and uphold safety at this iconic heritage site.
“It’s time for the annual safety inspection of structural integrity in the tunnel network,” Theiss said.
“We’re also installing additional timber supports to further strengthen and protect the heritage fabrication of this site.”

“While the Windows Walk is out of action, we encourage people to explore other walks in the area, like the Karangahake Gorge Tunnel Loop Walk and Owharoa Falls.”
Theiss said the Windows Walk will be back in action by December, ready for the busy summer season.
The closure will affect access between Dickey Flat campground and the Karangahake Gorge carpark.
