Update 3.52pm: Following a serious crash on State Highway 2, Hato Hone St John assessed and treated six patients, three in a moderate condition and one in a serious condition.
The person in a serious condition was transported to Whakatane Hospital via road.
Update 3.22pm: Three patients in a moderate condition have been transported to Whakatane hospital.
The Serious Crash Unit has responded to a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 2.
The highway has been blocked near Dunlop Road, Waiotahe, Ōpōtiki District, with diversions in place, according to a Police spokesman.
According to a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson, three fire trucks have been dispatched to the location.
"We are assisting Police and Ambulance at the scene."
Three ambulances and helicopters, along with a rapid response unit, one transfer vehicle, and one manager, attended the crash, according to a spokeswoman from Hato Hone St John.
"Initial indications suggest five patients are being assessed and treated," the spokeswoman said.
