A person has been taken into custody after they fled the scene following a three-vehicle crash in Mount Maunganui.

“At around 11.30am Police responded to reports of a crash involving three cars on Hewlett’s Road,” a Police spokesperson said.

“Police received several reports of erratic driving following the crash after one driver failed to stop and check on the other drivers.”

Police said they caught up with the driver on State Highway 2 near the Tauranga Harbour Bridge, following the vehicle from a distance.

“Soon after tyre deflation devices were successfully deployed. However, the driver continued northbound on SH2 towards Katikati.”

The vehicle came to a stop and the driver was arrested after tyre deflation devices were deployed for a second time further down SH2.

“Luckily, no one was injured in the incident and the person was taken into custody.”
