Parking blitz hits Tauranga Boys’ students

Dual city council parking ticket blitzes along 13th Avenue have left one mother scratching her head after numerous Tauranga Boys’ College students got stung.

The council first ticketed everyone on 13th Avenue from February 12 to 18, a mother from Omokoroa said.

“My son reckons they got about 40 students.”

The council struck again from March 3 to 8, with about 30 students being tickets, she said.

A lot of the students come from as far away as Omokoroa or Papamoa, where public transport can be unreliable, according to the mum.

“There’s no bus, so he might as well just keep driving.”

The students who drive to school are forced to compete for car parks with the rest of the workers in Tauranga and get trapped in a 120-minute parking zone.

She wants the council to release the parking down 13th Avenue to all-day parking, allowing students to stay at school for after-school sports and extracurricular activities.

Tauranga Boys' College students now park at the Wesley Methodist Church on the grass area, Faye said.

Many community groups use the complex at Wesley Methodist Church on 13th Ave through the working week and at weekends, property manager Jeremy Whimster said in a statement.

“Over the past 20 years or so, more people have been using their vehicles to access the complex.”

He has witnessed more people coming to the area to work, study, and live, placing a premium on the limited parking spaces.

“On very busy days, the grassed area on our property is fully occupied, damaging the turf on wet winter days.”

Due to the many groups using the church facilities, the church property management instigated a two-hour time limit on the parking space in front of the church, he said.

Tauranga City Council parking strategy manager Reece Wilkinson said the limited number of car parks under a 120-minute parking restriction on 13th Avenue has been in place since 2008.

“These restrictions are in place so people visiting the school and the many businesses in the area have access to short-term carparks,” he said.

“Meaning the street remains accessible for those not attending Tauranga Boys College.”

Due to parking constraints, students at Tauranga Boys’ are encouraged to use alternative transport, he said.

“If they do have to travel by car, students may need to be prepared to park at other locations where restrictions allow and walk to school from there.”

Tauranga Boys’ College was approached for comment but did not respond.

Fair Enough . . . BUT

“If they do have to travel by car, students may need to be prepared to park at other locations where restrictions allow and walk to school from there.”

That's fair enough. A bit of walking isn't going to harm them at all BUT Tauranga City Council, you may be forgetting that you unjustifiably took most of our carparks so the handful we are left with you now expect TBC students to take up for the day. Which of course, means even less parking for shoppers.
I'm sure this school could afford or strike up a deal for a 3 level parking building strictly for teachers and students on its current carpark site on Devonport Road thereby freeing up parking for visitors and shoppers.

Parking issues

So why don't the college take more responsibility and provide parking for students just like other businesses do?

There are school buses... It's just not convenient.

CAR PARKS ????

Schools are not responsible for providing parking. Find a park like everyone else has to ! LIfe isn't easy in the "big city" for anyone wanting a park that they can afford. One of the reasons no one wants to go into the city. Just wait for the day when firms want all to actually come to work at the "work premises".

$ for TCC

This is a TCC money grab from the poor students who are trying to get to school because the public transport etc is inefficient. Provide them with the facility to allow the students to continue their education, this is trying to put the brakes on learning. The current parking for the students is not working.

School Parking

This is absolutely appalling. At least the kids are going to school. I could understand it if they were parking there and just mucking around or going shopping. What the heck is wrong with the council? Their cars aren’t doing any harm.

Equity

My son has to leave home suuuuper early to get one of the parks on Devonport Rd. Not cos of the students - because of the staff! Despite having an onsite carpark that is reserved for staff use, many of the 250+ staff fill the public spaces on the streets surrounding the school first. Where's the justice in that?! When we called the school office to ask about this, the lady on the end of the phone got very angry at us, stating, "I can park wherever I want!"

So I think that one of two things needs to happen:
1. The staff should use the onsite car park, not the streets.
2. Students should have the option of using the car park, too!
