Police are investigating a serious crash which has left two people injured and a vehicle a burnt out wreck.

The crash happen this morning on the Thames Coast Road near Tapu. Fire Northern Communications shift manager Carren Larking says the car crashed over a bank and caught fire.

One person from the car was seriously injured and another had moderate injuries.

Carren says both people managed to get out before firefighters arrived.

"The car was on fire but there were no persons trapped in the vehicle," she says.

A helicopter was called to take the patients to hospital.
