New iPhone, no iHeadphone port

New iPhone details have been released to the general public, and the absentminded among us could be in trouble.

Among other feature announcements Apple has shared that the new iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7S Plus, which will be available to pre-order in New Zealand tomorrow September 9, will lack a headphone port.

This will mean users either have to use – and keep track of – wireless Bluetooth headphones, or purchase a NZ$15 dongle to insert into the charging port that will act as a headphone port.

The announcement was made in San Francisco today.

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the iPhone 7 is 'the best iPhone we have ever created”.

Apple senior vice president Philip Schiller announced the new Apple product ‘AirPods' to accompany the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7S Plus. The AirPods are Apple's solution to the new iPhones not having a headphone jack, and will be individual wireless headphones.

AirPods feature a microphone so users can take advantage of hands-free calling and use Siri, and are also able to detect when they are removed from users' ears so they will pause music.

Apple claims the AirPods will be able to play music for five hours on a single charge, and can be charged using a special case that can hold 24 hours of charge. Charging for 15 minutes will reportedly allow three hours of listening time.

The ‘AirPods' can be charged on-the-go in a special case.

The AirPods will cost NZ$269 and will not be included with your iPhone 7 and iPhone 7S Plus, but it is reported that any Bluetooth headphones will work.

Instead, Apple will supply buyers with a set of original EarPods with a lightning connector and a lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack adaptor.

The iPhone 7 will also have a 12 mega pixel camera, a quad LED true tone flash, and Philip called the camera 'it is the best camera ever in an iPhone”.

The iPhone 7S Plus will have dual cameras, meaning the iPhone 7S Plus will have two 12MP cameras.

One is a wide angle lens – the same as the regular iPhone 7 – and the other uses a telephoto lens.

The home button has also been modified to give feedback for messages, notification, and rings, and more storage options have been added.

The case is reported to be both water and dust resistant and the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7S Plus will feature stereo speakers.

Both phones will also be available in five different colours – silver, gold, rose gold, matte black, and high-gloss jet black.

The iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7S Plus pricing looks a bit steep, with the cheapest option being a 32GB iPhone 7 costing NZ$1199.

NZ pre-orders placed on September 9 will be shipped from September 16.
