Bridges welcomes 110km/h rule

Tauranga MP and Transportation Minister Simon Bridges is 'almost certain” the Tauranga Eastern Link will be one of a few highways to see an increased speed limit change.

The proposal to increase the speed limit to 110km/h on some roads was introduced yesterday, with Associate Transport Minister Craig Foss saying a new Speed Management Guide will modernise New Zealand's approach to managing speed and enable a limit of 110km/h on some roads.

Following the announcement, Simon told SunLive that he thought the Tauranga Eastern Link is a near certainty for the 110km/h rule.

'We've invested huge money to make it to the highest safety specifications with median barriers, four lanes and no access to properties on it. It's safer and a bit faster.

'We're going to consult on the rule change on that earlier next year and we hope to have that rule in place for when the law change comes in on August 1, 2017 when 110 km will be allowed on some roads. I think almost certainly including the Tauranga Eastern Link.”

Other roads proposed to have the new speed limit introduced on them include: Transmission Gully motorway being constructed north of Wellington, the soon-to-be-open Kapiti Expressway, the Waikato Expressway and the Northern Gateway toll road north of Auckland.

The Speed Management Guide will replace the speed setting guidance in the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2003. Consultation on the changes will begin in early 2017.

(Simple Simons) photo again, why wait till August next year,(thats right) it will take that long to have meetings, and it will pay for the new 110kmph signs to be made out of all the FINES for already being taken for this speed,Nothing about Mr Plod doing 209 kmph about 8 weeks ago chasing a Motorbike on TEL, IMMMM,wonder why,one rule for one and another for the other GANG,my halfpennies worth, No1 in the Bay Thankyou, 10-4 out.

Well Simon if the Eastern Link doesn't make the cut than I doubt there is a highway in country that is good enough.

Good work Simon Bridges

At last some enlightened thinking about our road management. I don't agree with everything Simon says but this is good. He previously suggested new laws to improve lane discipline on motorways - is that still on the books ?

Perhaps 110 is not too fast

For an open road but where does it end - there must be a point where the 110kph then goes back to 100kph. Is that where the traffic police will sit to boost the coffers?

110 kmh, mr bridges

personally i dont care im used to seeing dead body's at road accidents, increasing the speed is all good because people like me deal with it, so when it happens to your family get over it, untill you see a dead body you have no idea, 90 km is fast enough for me and i get there. bridges you an idiot.
