UPDATED 6.45PM: Police are asking motorists to avoid or delay travel along State Highway 29A following a crash near Maungatapu.
Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru says the crash occurred 100m past the Maungatapu Bridge in the lanes heading towards Mount Maunganui at about 6pm.
'According to our information only one vehicle was involved in the crash and no persons were trapped.
'Ambulance staff are currently at the scene assisting one patient but we have no details on the severity of their injuries.”
A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says traffic is backed up all the way to the Maungatapu Roundabout and police are currently at the scene directing traffic.
The New Zealand Transport Agency advises motorists travelling from Mount Maunganui to Tauranga either delay their travels if and where possible, or consider using SH2/Takitimu Drive.

Emergency services are at the scene of a crash involving a car that's gone down a bank on State Highway 29A in Tauranga.
A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says two cars appeared to be involved in the crash which occurred near the Maungatapu Bridge at about 6pm.
'I drove past the scene and there was a person being removed from one of the vehicles,” the caller says.
At this stage it is unknown if anyone has sustained injuries as a result of the crash.

A report has come in of a car going down a bank on State Highway 29A in Tauranga.
A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says the crash occurred near the Maungatapu Bridge in the 30 minutes.
At this stage it is unknown how many vehicles are involved or if anyone has sustained injuries as a result of the crash.
The caller says the crash has caused traffic to back up all the way to the Welcome Bay roundabout

Here we go again same corner, all those yellow poles make NO difference,its cost $ millions on that corner,womder what NZTA will say about this now, HANG ON, its too close to XMAS, will look at it next year, about FEBUARY will do,Maybe paint sticks pink,my tuppence worth, Thankyou No1 in the Bay, 10-4 out.

How about an intelligence test as part of acquiring a licence? That way idiots wouldn't be on the roads and there would be no need for an idiot lane. You couldn't trust them to get in the idiot lane and stick to it. Less congestion and safer roads. It's very straightforward. Some people have less intelligence than a chimpanzee, and I don't see them on the roads.

She wasn't an idiot she made a mistake and she was very sorry & more concerned that she had hurt someone rather than worrying about her own injuries. Those yellow poles along with that new no car lane actually made a HUGE HUGE difference to me yesterday they saved me from getting really hurt or worst so thank you NZTA for putting them in other-wise I might not be here today.
