Police are warning motorists to avoid State Highway 27 near Walton Road in Matamata following a serious crash.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a two-car crash at around 12.07pm.

A police spokesperson says initial indications are that one person is critically injured.

'Diversions will be put in place.

'Motorists are advised to avoid the area.”

The NZTA are asking motorists to delay their journey or to use an alternative route.
