Burst water pipe causes council building closure

A water pipe has burst in the Bay of Plenty Regional Council's Tauranga office, requiring the doors to be closed to the public for the next five days.

"The Bay of Plenty Regional Council office at 1 Elizabeth Street will be closed to the public until Monday August 29," says a council spokesperson.

"This is due to a burst internal water pipe in the building."

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council works with seven different district and city councils: Tauranga City, Western Bay of Plenty District, Rotorua District, Whakatāne District, Kawerau District, Ōpōtiki District and Taupo District. The Council has offices in Whakatāne, Rotorua and Tauranga, and is responsible for responsible for land, air and water, as well as public transport and economic development in the region.

The Elizabeth Street building known as Regional House was built in 1986, and was refurbished in 2017.

Tauranga City Council meetings including Strategy, Finance and Risk meetings have also been taking place at the Bay of Plenty Regional Council Chambers at Regional House.
