Emergency services are responding to a water rescue near Mount Maunganui.

A spokesperson said police received a report of a person in the water requiring assistance at Mount Maunganui about 1.15pm.

A rescue is in progress.

A SunLive reader said they could see a dinghy towing a yacht.

A Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard spokesperson said a person had fallen overboard from a small yacht.

“Someone is assisting them straightaway. We don’t need to send Coastguard out.
