MetService is keeping a close eye on what could potentially become a tropical cyclone in the South Pacific.
"We are closely monitoring a tropical low north of Fiji which could develop into a tropical cyclone next week," says a MetService spokesperson.
"It is expected to track westwards towards Vanuatu in the next few days before curving southeast and moving out of the tropics later next week."
MetService says it is too early to say whether it will have an impact on New Zealand after it leaves the tropics, but expect to get a better idea once the tropical cyclone forms.
"Although it is not uncommon for tropical cyclones to form in the South Pacific at this time of year, New Zealanders are understandably very sensitive about any tropical cyclones that have the potential to come our way.
The MetService tropical cyclone specialists issue a tropical cyclone potential bulletin daily, where people can keep up with developments in the tropics.
