A shower or two is on the cards for Tauranga today before a bout of fine weather.
This is the current forecast for the region for the week.
A strong south to southwest flow will affect northern and central New Zealand during the second half of Monday, then this should ease slowly during Tuesday, says an update from the MetService.
"A strong wind watch has been issued for parts of northern and central New Zealand on Monday, and this extends into Tuesday morning for eastern Tairawhiti/Gisborne and northern Hawke's Bay.
"There is moderate confidence that southerly winds will reach severe gale about exposed parts of eastern Tairawhiti/Gisborne and northern Hawke's Bay early Tuesday morning, and low confidence about other parts of Tairawhiti/Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, eastern Bay of Plenty, the Central North Island High Country, coastal Wairarapa, Wellington and coastal Marlborough on Tuesday morning.
"A weak ridge of high pressure then generally predominates over New Zealand from later Tuesday to Friday."
The MetService says a weak front is likely to move northwards over the South Island on Thursday and early Friday, and a low with associated rain-band may affect the northern North Island late Thursday and Friday.
"At this stage, there is a minimal risk of severe weather associated with these features."
