The weather is expected to be mainly settled for the North Island today, but a cold front is moving into the far south this afternoon says a WeatherWatch spokesperson.
"Then [it] moves northwards bringing rain, with some snow in the ranges also."
For the Bay of Plenty, Northland, Auckland, and Waikato, mist or fog was possible "first thing", with more expected early for inland areas.
"Mostly sunny otherwise with a few harmless clouds in the afternoon. Light winds tend southwest in the afternoon."
Highs for the four regions are expected to be between 14 and 16 degrees Celsius today.
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Morning mist or fog possible, breaking to sun then some cloud from midday. Chance of a light shower from afternoon for Taranaki and Kapiti, overnight showers are more likely. Light winds tend west to northwest after midday.

Eastern North Island
Any early cloud clears then mostly sunny, light winds tend east to northeast in the afternoon.
Highs: 14 – 16
Wellington
Areas of cloud, there may be a spit or shower from afternoon, more so in the north. Northerly winds.

Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly sunny, light north to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 14 – 17
Canterbury
Mostly sunny, light north to northwesterly winds, tending east to northeast near the coast after midday. Late evening a southwest change pushes northwards bringing thickening cloud and eventually showers. Rain overnight, more so inland. Overnight snow to 700m, 500m for South Canterbury.
Highs: 13 – 15
West Coast
Mostly cloudy with occasional showers, rain moves into Fiordland during the morning thanks to a cold front. The cold front pushes northwards slowly in the afternoon / evening but weakening bringing in a southwest change. Clearing up overnight for South Westland.
Highs: 13 – 14
Southland & Otago
Morning sun, a west to southwest change early afternoon for Southland then Otago late afternoon brings rain, easing back in the evening for Southland, overnight for Otago. Snow flurries lowers to 400m at night.
Highs: 12 – 17
