MetService has issued a Severe Weather Watch for parts of New Zealand, with heavy rain possible in Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula.
Subtropical air is expected to affect the upper North Island today through into Tuesday, with a band of rain moving slowly southwards bringing periods of heavy rain.Heavy Rain Watches are in force for Northland, parts of Auckland and also Coromandel Peninsula.

Area: Northland about and north of the Bay of Islands Valid: 16 hours from 11:00am Sun 3 Sep to 3:00am Mon 4 Sep Forecast: A band of rain is expected to move slowly southwards with periods of heavy rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria. Thunderstorms are possible early Monday morning. Note, there is uncertainty about the speed of movement of this rain-band, and the validity period could be changed. Area: Northland south of the Bay of Islands and Auckland north of Orewa Valid: 29 hours from 10:00pm Sun 3 Sep to 3:00am Tue 5 Sep Forecast: A band of rain is expected to move slowly southwards, with embedded heavy falls. There is a risk that the rain-band could become stationary at times, increasing rainfall accumulation in localised places, where amounts may approach warning criteria especially in the east. Thunderstorms are possible in Northland during Monday morning. Note, due to uncertainties, the validity period could be changed.
