Saving a life could be a haircut away

Juan Cortes let his hair grow for two years before shaving it all off.

Have you ever wonder how to help someone who is fighting for their life?

Well, the answer is really straightforward, says Juan Cortes.

The newest member of the SunLive news team, Juan says everything starts with a selfless action, a pair of scissors and a comb. Or just a set of hair clippers.

“I let my hair grow for at least two-and-a-half years. Then I found out that one of my beloved aunties back in my home country of Colombia had cancer.

“I decided to do something to help her and people who like my aunty face a big monster and all its shades.

“Unfortunately, she couldn’t see what I was doing because she passed away three weeks before the day of my fundraising.”

After shaving his hair, Juan donated it to be made into a wig to give someone undergoing cancer treatment a new look.

He says people need to stop thinking that it is only famous people, singers or millionaires who can help good causes.

He says anyone can fundraise and help people have a better life and beat cancer.

With the help of the Cancer Society, Juan says people across New Zealand can enrol themselves in different activities to raise funds as individuals or in teams.

He is challenging other people to do what he did by putting their hair on the chopping block, organising challenges or some other fun event to raise awareness and money for the Cancer Society.

“Help those battle against a disease that claimed the lives of 10,079 people in New Zealand in 2020.”
