MetService has issued a severe weather watch, as windy conditions and possible heavy rain is forecast for parts of the North Island.
A complex trough of low pressure is expected to affect the North Island from Sunday into Monday morning.
A few areas are likely to experience gales, with a risk that they could become severe in exposed places. Additionally, some places may experience a period of heavy rain. MetService says watches for severe gales and heavy rain are in force. A Heavy Rain Watch is in place for the Wairoa District, and Tairawhiti/Gisborne south of Gisborne City. This is valid for 14 hours from 6am - 8pm today, October 8. A period of heavy rain is possible. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria, especially about the ranges. A Strong Wind Watch is in place for Northland north of Kaitaia, which is valid for six hours from 11am - 5pm today. West to southwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.A Strong Wind Watch is also in place for Bay of Plenty east of Whakatane, which is valid for 14 hours from 7pm today, Sunday, October 8, to 9am tomorrow, Monday, October 9. Southeast winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
